ICANN chairman saw little value in delaying a ICANN release of the new gTLD program, when critics have not found a specific problem that they needed to change in order to not delay the release. With the release of the the application, the cost to buy a new domain has a huge application fee attached to it of 185,000. The applicants will be able to push away from the traditional .dot com’s and will be able to have a new ending, opening all sorts of marketing strategies. The Federal Trade Commission claims that the new system will be able to create fraudulent websites and confuse users. However, ICANN says they have set up significant amount of time and financial interests aside to assure the success of the program. The concern is for users to become victims of internet cyber-hackers who pray on misspellings of websites. To read further on this topic click here.

The ccTLD’s according to the administration will be registered and will be handled in a transparent manner. To read further on this subject click here.

Last month ICANN had its 42nd public meeting in Dakar and a volunteer group called JAS has high hopes that there could be subsidized gTLD application fees for applicants who need it. The hope is that the 185,000 fee will be reduced for 45,000 for developing nations applicants. JAS is also setting up a loan program for these applicants to afford the reduced fee and pay back the group overtime. However, ICANN has no intention of changing the fee, because according to representatives the fees have been set up accordingly to cost. To read further on this topic please click here.

According to several sources, most notably the .me registry itself, the .me ccTLD of Montenegro is the fastest growing ccTLD in the last year. It recently reached 250,000 registrations and said the following in a press release announcing that it has hit the quarter million mark:
The .ME Registry announced today its popular ccTLD extension has hit 250,000 domains registered. Montenegro’s .ME Registry has seen significant growth since it launched the domain extension worldwide just over one year ago. In fact, .ME is the fastest growing new ccTLD.
JamesCrocker.Me, registered through GoDaddy.com, was the name which pushed the Registry’s portfolio to the quarter-million milestone.
The .ME domain extension has proven to be incredibly popular worldwide. More than 48,000 applications were received to participate in the current online auction of .ME domains which ends in just a few days. The next online auction, hosted by NameJet.com, is scheduled to begin June 5.

The release goes on to talk about how the success of the .ME extension is due, in large part, to its wide appeal in use for marketing/brand and personal use. Many individuals have registered their names in the .me extension, and several popular sites, including popular dating site Youand.me have used the extension as part of their site/brand name.
