.PT Liberalization

reminder:  .PT liberalization

We are glad to confirm that .pt registrations are now liberalized  as of May 1, 2012.

However after the liberalization, there are some rules that will persist. For example, the domain name still can’t correspond to names that lead to error or confusion over their ownership (namely by coinciding with well-known or prestigious brands that belong to someone else) or to a geographical name.

US Re-issues

The US National Telecommunications and Information Adiministration has decided to reissue  the the sensitive IANA contract. The contract includes management of the central root zone of the internet domain name system and allocation of intent protocol addresses with the regional internet registries. During the ICANN meeting it was seen that many to be the sole bidder.  This is a interesting change for ICANN after having a glitch and not being able to close the applications for the new gTLD system. The United States and China have been engaging in cyber war games that are causing anger in Washington over the veracity of the Beijing oriented cyber attacks on government organizations and big businesses. China has very belligerent in addressing the problem and they feel that they don’t have to because the power relationship has changed between the US and China and it is favoring them.  To read further on this story click here. 

ICANN Glitch Uncovered

ICANN now has identified a single incident to what happened with he TAS Security problem. The problem stemmed from a problem in the way the system handled interrupted deletions of file attachments according Akram Atallah, ICANN’s COO. This caused other applicants to be able to view other applicants attached documents. It is unsure whether they will continue with the April 30th application they will update the target date. Not a Fan

According to TIm Berners-Lee, the inventor of the web, that he is certainly not impressed with ICANN’s new top gTLD program that while allow customers to brand their domain names. He says that the only role for new domain names is if it is offering something social different like the purpose of a .org for non-profits. He also isn’t a fan of having to register trademarks. Date to Change with ICANN

The New gTLD filing deadline has been delayed once again due to the TAS glitch. In a statement made by ICANN’s COO Akram Atallah the problem was data leakage problem.

“We believe that we have fixed the glitch, and we are testing it to make sure.

ICANN is committed to reopening the application system as soon as we can confirm that the problem has been resolved and we have had proper time for testing.

We also want to inform all applicants, before we reopen, whether they have been affected by the glitch. We are still gathering information so we can do that.

Accordingly, the application system will not reopen tomorrow.”

The Plans may change after April 20th.

Notification of Clients

ICANN says that they plan on notifying all applicants whether they were affected by the security breach. The company still plans on having the big reveal day on April 30th, but who knows if they will have this mess straightened out. ICANN states,”An intensive review has produced no evidence that any data beyond the file names and user names could be accessed by other users.We are currently reviewing the data to confirm which applicants were affected. As soon as the data is confirmed, we will inform all applicants whether they were affected.” To read further on this topic click here.
