Writer Michele Neylon writes about the five reasons why the new gTLDs should not be closed. He says that his ideas have been supported by Kathy Kleiman, Microsoft, and Dave Winer. His ideas simplify the reasons why closed gTLDs are a bad idea for people who aren’t domain geeks. His ideas are 1. The Internet thrives with freedom, 2. Entire domains and words will be shut off by certain companies, 3. Generic words belong to the people 4. Words that are closed off might drive unfair restrictions and might drive future entrepreneurs away from the market place, 5. ICANN closed off certain names to certain brands.
