There are an exciting array of new Generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) being introduced regularly. They are all .FUN and .GAMES for consumers, but for a brand who is trying to protect their name it can be overwhelming when there are new gTLDs and phases you’re supposed to know about on the daily – but don’t. We hear you!

If you’ve heard that a trademark can help you get a domain name, you’re absolutely right.

Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) was built into the new gTLD program to protect the rights of trademark holders. It takes in trademark and property rights from all over the world and integrates it into the registration process. There is a magical period of time called Sunrise, which is the mandatory first phase for all new gTLDs. This period gives trademark holders who are validated in the Trademark Clearinghouse an opportunity to secure domain names before they hit Landrush and General Availability. This is how the process works (courtesy of ICANN).
