ICANN and the Middle East
At the Dubai Conference yesterday, ICANN stresses the positives for the middle east and arabic speakers, hoping that they will take the new gTLD opportunity to spread their online presence. You can only apply for these gTLD’s in Arabic, Chinese, and other scripts. Concerns that faced ICANN included that the region is lacking in some serious technological know how and that they need to catch up to speed. These new domains will not only be just a city name or company name, but a branding term. ICANN leader Beckstrom highlighted that these new gTLD’s should be taken seriously and that they have to be reliable places for people to go 24/7.
