Are you on Google’s free edition of G Suite? Soon, you will need to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription to keep your services.
Only O.G. Google fans will know this, but for a time Google offered a free legacy edition of G Suite, formerly known as Google Apps. If you’re one of the lucky ones who have been using the free edition of G Suite for over a decade, we have good and bad news for you. The bad news is you will need to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription to keep your services. The good news is that you will have access to an extended business feature set.
What’s happening to free legacy G Suite?
According to Google, the free legacy edition of G Suite will no longer be available starting May 1, 2022. If you are a legacy user and do not upgrade before May 1st, you will be automatically upgraded to Google Workspace. You will be able to use your new Google Workspace subscription at no cost until July 1, 2022. Essentially you are getting an opportunity to try Google Workspace for free before you have to start paying to continue using your service.

Similarities between the free legacy G Suite and Google Workspace
While Google Apps is similar to what we know today as Google Workspace, it has a reduced set of features. Google has upheld the same vision throughout the years. From Google Apps to Google Workspace, the goal has always been to provide a service of hosted communication applications for organizations without the hassle of installing and maintaining software or hardware. Today’s Google Workspace is a superior iteration of this vision that dramatically reduces maintenance costs and accommodates growing businesses with easy-to-scale cloud storage.
Features available in free G Suite:
- Gmail & email aliases (2GB per user)
- Google Talk instant messaging and voice calling service (now Meet, Chat, and Google Voice)
- Google Calendar
- Google Page Creator (now Sites)
