Phishing used to be limited by how fast a human could register lookalike domains and stand up fake pages. AI phishing attacks have removed that limit. Cofense’s February 2026 threat report logged a malicious email every 19 seconds in 2025, more than double 2024’s pace, and named AI-enabled phishing kits that automatically generate domains and subdomains as a core driver. Credential phishing on .es domains jumped 51x in a year, pushing a once-obscure TLD to third most-abused.
Why does AI change the math on brand protection?
Old domain generation algorithms (DGAs) produced random, obviously fake strings. AI kits produce plausible, brand-adjacent names. And lookalikes are only half the problem. The same report found attackers hosting payloads on trusted platforms, and no platform is more trusted by your customers than your own domain.
How do you find lookalike domains before they’re weaponized?
Manual searches and static blocklists can’t keep pace with kits that out-generate any human reviewer. Domain Name Monitoring watches new registrations everywhere your brand could be copied.
- Coverage: More than 99% of TLDs, monitored around the clock, with weekly alerts on identical and confusingly similar registrations.
- Typosquats and homographs: A single mistyped letter, or look-alike characters swapped in from another alphabet.
How does dangling DNS turn your subdomains into phishing sites?
The other half sits inside your perimeter. When a retired campaign site’s DNS record still points to a deleted cloud resource (a dangling DNS record), an attacker can claim that resource and host phishing on promo.yourbrand.com, your real domain. That’s a subdomain takeover. Your users were trained to check the URL, and this one checks out.
Attack Surface Monitoring continuously discovers your external-facing and cloud assets, including shadow IT no one remembers launching, and flags dangling DNS and other misconfigurations before an attacker finds them.
What should you do next?
You can’t predict every variant an AI kit will generate. You can know what’s being registered against your brand, and make sure nothing you own is left for an attacker to borrow.
