Growing up in Austria, we had a running joke about our neighbor to the south: Slovenia is so small, you can drive through the entire country without realizing you were ever there.
There’s some truth to it. Most people treat Slovenia as a shortcut on the way to the beaches of Croatia or the cities of Italy. That’s a shame, because they’re missing one of Europe’s most beautiful countries. Lately, Slovenia’s internet code, .si, has been getting a second look for a completely different reason.

This is the first stop in our travel series spotlighting country-code domains with a double identity: real places worth visiting, and extensions the tech world has adopted for its own reasons.
Why Slovenia deserves more than a drive-through
For years, I was one of those drive-through travelers myself. Only recently has Slovenia become a real vacation spot for me, and it feels like I’m not the only one catching on. My favorite discovery so far is Portorož, a seaside town on the country’s short but lovely stretch of Adriatic coast. The seafood is as fresh as it gets, and just outside town you can visit the Sečovlje salt pans, where sea salt is still harvested the traditional way. Walking between the salt fields at sunset is one of those moments that stays with you.
And that’s just the coast. Within a couple of hours’ drive, you’ll also find:

Small country, wide variety. You just have to stop the car.
How a country code became tech shorthand
Every country has a two-letter internet extension, like .at for Austria or .it for Italy. Slovenia’s is .si, and for decades, that was the whole story.
Then “SI” started showing up somewhere unexpected: as shorthand for superintelligence, the idea of AI that surpasses human intelligence. As the topic hit the headlines, domain investors and AI companies started paying attention to .si names.
In more than a decade in the domain industry, I’ve watched this happen before with .ai and .io. Both went from obscure island codes to tech favorites, and the pattern is always the same: a domain takes on a new meaning, early movers grab the best names, and everyone else wishes they’d acted sooner.

What brands should know before registering a .si domain
Whether .si appeals to you for Slovenia or for superintelligence, a few practical points help:
- Anyone can register one. You don’t need to live in or have a business in Slovenia to register a .si domain.
- Check your name early. When an extension gains a new meaning, short and memorable names go fast.
- Think about your audience. A .si domain can signal a Slovenian presence, an AI focus, or both. Make sure the message fits your brand.
- Protect what matters. If you work in AI, registering your brand on .si stops someone else from claiming it first.
- Keep it under your company’s control. Register domains in your organization’s name, not an employee’s, so they don’t get lost when people change roles.
Don’t just drive through
Slovenia has always rewarded the travelers who actually stop. Its domain now has the same story: easy to overlook, but worth a closer look. Whether you’re planning a getaway or your brand’s next move, give .si more than a passing glance.
